We are it’s giving prizes
After Zohran’s primary win in June, I had a shower thought about wanting to make a high quality volunteer hat with metal handwriting for myself and other friends who hit the pavement canvassing.
What if we sold them in person at cost (no profits) to other volunteers? What if people had to talk to each other to find a zhat (zohran hat)? “Aren't we all on TEAM ZOHRAN?” I asked myself.
I collaborated and designed in Mexico where I have strong ties and worked together with friend Chris Cruz who owns sacrifice to bring this to life. What we created also maybe more subtly, but certainly at the forefront of our collaboration shows that we are connected beyond the 5 boroughs and across our borders. The metal handwriting acknowledges the music genre’s historical alignment with social activism in Mexico.
In the wake of increased deportations and ICE’s horrific presence in NYC we decided to add $3 (more if you wanted) to every hat purchase to go directly to mi tlalli a local NYC and Latina led mutual aid working with asylum seekers and doing the hard work of rapid response and care.
Since Zohran’s historic primary win we hit the ground with the zhats signing people up to canvass and registering people to vote. We spent all fall on the ground with you. We hosted, attended and activated. We started seeing the zhat in the wild. We met so many people at concerts, events, the NYC marathon, prospect park, out canvassing, and on the street that shared our passion for community and a better NYC.
After our initial donation to mi tlalli we wanted to make the zhat available to people who are Team Zohran and want to contribute to our community, but couldn’t make it in person. We heard from A LOT of you over the last weeks. The online zhat is now at cost $13 to include online cc processing fees, and we’ve increased the donation to $12 (vs $3) making it $25 plus shipping costs. We will offer it online while supply lasts.
